KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Government will pay a compassionate fund, or wang ehsan, to Kelantan for oil extracted from waters off the state, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced. He said the payment, in the form of development programmes for the state and the poor, would begin next year.
“The allotment of wang ehsan to Kelantan will take into consideration the production and sale of petroleum from the Bumi Selatan field. “The allotment will be channelled after a detailed report on the amount of gas produced. The first allocation is expected to be in 2010,” he said in Parliament yesterday during the question-and-answer session.
Salahuddin Ayub (Kubang Kerian-PAS) had asked Najib to state when oil royalty claims by the Kelantan government would be paid by Petronas. Najib said the development programmes would be carried out by the Federal Government after negotiating with the state government.
“This decision reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to ensure that people from all walks of life enjoy the benefits of the country’s development, concurrent with the inclusive principle and 1Malaysia spirit practised by the Government,” he said.
